Built along a ridge in the East Bay city of Castro Valley, Greenridge is a neighborhood that includes almost 200 Eichler homes, making it one of the largest Eichler communities in the East Bay, second only to Rancho San Miguel in Walnut Creek. Most of the homes are on Greenridge Road, Highwood Road, and two or three small cul-de-sacs along the way.
The Greenridge Eichlers were built in the early to mid 1960s from plans designed by Claude Oakland and Jones & Emmons, and feature a variety of floor plans. These Castro Valley Eichler homes are an interesting mix of low-pitched roofs, flat-tops, and models with steeply pitched A-frame style gables flanked by flat roofing on either side.
In addition to the features that many of today’s Eichler homeowners appreciate, including floor-to-ceiling walls of glass, radiant floor heating, and exposed post-and-beam construction, some of the Eichler properties in Greenridge offer a glimpse of the East Bay city lights, something quite rare for a home built by Joseph Eichler. Greenridge is one of Eichler’s few hillside developments. The only other hillside Eichler community in the East Bay is Sequoyah Hills in the Oakland Hills.
