Barron Park Eichler Homes, Palo Alto

Palo Alto’s Barron Park neighborhood is home to three Eichler subdivisions.  The El Centro Gardens homes were all built on La Jennifer Way.  University Gardens Eichler homes are on Kendall Avenue, Josina Ave. and Barron Avenue; and the Eichlers in Maybell Gardens can be found along Amaranta and Maybell Avenues.

University Gardens, an Eichler community of 50 homes was one of Eichler’s earliest projects.  These homes, built in 1949, were pre-architect Eichlers and were designed by Joseph Eichler and refined by a draftsman known as Castor.

The 16 Eichler homes built in El Centro Gardens, designed by Anshen + Allen, were completed in 1950 and represented one of Eichler’s first attempts at community planning.  El Centro Gardens was named, along with Greer Park (Palo Alto) and Atherwood in Redwood City as “Subdivision of the Year” in the December 1950 issue of Architectural Forum magazine.

The third Eichler subdivision in Barron Park is Maybell Gardens, a 1950s era community of approximately 25 homes.  Many of the homes in Maybell Gardens, as well as El Centro Gardens and University Gardens, have been extensively remodeled and no longer bear a resemblance to Joseph Eichler’s vision, while others have been updated with a nod to Eichler’s Mid-Century Modern aesthetic.
