I just learned about a fabulous new exhibition that has been showing at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento since mid-November.  I feel like I’m a little late to the party – but as they say, better late than never.  The exhibit will run through February 23, 2014, so it isn’t too late to head over to Sacramento to see this fabulous collection of Warren MacKenzie’s work.

MacKenzie is an influential ceramist/potter and teacher who has contributed a great deal to the world of American Studio pottery.  Striking a balance between form and function, and influenced by the aesthetics of Japanese and Korean ware, MacKenzie’s work has the simple clean lines that we Modernists appreciate and the “usability” that we all look for in everyday life.

As an Eichler homeowner, I appreciate the challenges of bringing mid-century construction and sensibilities into the 21st century, while remaining true to the spirit and intent of the original structure.  As such, I’m especially interested in the changes that are in the works for the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Marin County Civic Center.  Meetings there are about to become a lot more interesting and user-friendly.  In a project beginning this month and planned to be completed by February, the Board of Supervisors’ chambers in the historic Civic Center are receiving their first major upgrade since the Center opened in 1962.

New speakers, microphones, lighting, flat-screen monitors, and high-definition cameras will be installed, along with an assistive

I’m excited about the new exhibit that kicks off tonight with a members’ reception at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.  Created to appeal to all you contemporary design buffs out there, the show features the award winning, San Francisco based firm of Aidlin Darling in the exhibition Site and Senses: The Architecture of Aidlin Darling Design.  Running from December 20, 2013 to March 2, 2014, the exhibit takes an innovative, multi-sensory approach to the impact that architecture has on our lives.

As part of the exhibit, the museum is offering a public educational program on two Tuesdays in January (January 14 + January 21) titled Icons of Modern Architecture.  This seminar will take a look at some of the modern era’s most notable buildings.

Marin Modern Real Estate, a Marin based real estate company that specializes in Eichler and Mid-Century Modern homes, has opened a satellite office in Terra Linda.  The new office is in the Terra Linda Shopping Center at 633 Del Ganado Road – next to Three Twins Ice Cream and Scotty’s Market.  Marin Modern’s new space is currently the only real estate office in Terra Linda and is conveniently located to assist homeowners and prospective homebuyers in Terra Linda and Lucas Valley with their real estate needs, whether their homeownership style is Eichler, Mid-Century Modern, or traditional.

We Bay Area Eichler homeowners are lucky enough to live in an area where there is always something interesting going on, and no time of year is more exciting than the Christmas season.  Each town and city is full of holiday lights, craft fairs, and local festivities.  Performances of The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, and holiday concerts can be found throughout the Bay Area.  Something that is somewhat unique to our area in northern California are the lighted boat parades that bring a fun element to our celebrations.

This weekend brings two parades that you and your family, as well as your friends and neighbors, are sure to enjoy.  Closest to home (for me, at least) is the 26th Annual Sausalito Lighted Boat Parade  + Fireworks where you can enjoy eats,

With Thanksgiving coming so late this year, we’ve got to jump into preparations for Christmas without taking a breath.  I’ve always got my eye opened for items with a Modern or Mid-Century vibe.  My #1 pick this year is the Modern Memory Christmas Tree that puts a contemporary twist on the traditional Christmas tree.  It’s easy to put up, a snap to take down, and makes a sophisticated holiday statement in any Eichler or contemporary styled home.  An added bonus is that Modern Christmas Trees, the company that manufactures this stunning tree, is donating a portion of the proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Association.  If you’d like to see one of these gorgeous trees in “real life”, drop by either the main Marin Modern Real Estate office in downtown San Rafael,
