Looking for some family-friendly activities to ring in the New Year? I’ve found some fun activities for our Eichler and MCM friends up here in northern California. (The activities aren’t MCM-centric, however. I think traditionalists will find these to their liking as well!) For those of you with little ones, many of these celebrations take place early in the day, which allows them to get in on the fun and still be home by bedtime.

In the Bay Area you’ll find kid oriented NYE festivities throughout the area.

  • Ring in the New Year with Bubble and Beads at the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito, 12/31/15 from 9 am – 2 pm.
  • Celebrate Happy New Year, Charlie Brown at the Charles Schultz Museum in Santa Rosa, 12/31/15 10 am – 4 pm.

I just want to take a minute to wish all our Eichler and Mid-Century Modern friends a merry Christmas. Hopefully you’ve finished up your shopping, your guests have arrived – or you have had safe travels to your destination, and you are ready to settle down with your loved ones and enjoy the wonder of the season.

I appreciate each and every one of you. We share so much more than the love of Eichler homes and MCM sensibilities that has brought us together; and I send you all heartfelt wishes for happiness and health this holiday season and throughout the coming year.

Merry Christmas!

The holidays are here and the houseguests are coming. Prepping for your overnight visitors during the holidays doesn’t need to take long – and most of it can be done well ahead of time. Just like Santa, all you need to do is make a list and check it twice to see that all is nice for your company!

  • Make up the guest room: Put on clean bedding and set out an extra blanket. Vacuum and dust. Guests always appreciate an empty drawer or shelf if you’ve got the space. It’s always nice to set out a bottle or two of water, a couple of magazines, and snacks for the midnight munchies.
  • Ready the bathroom: Clean the tub/shower, sinks, mirrors and toilets. Empty the trash and make sure there is extra toilet paper. Put out extra towels and toiletries for

We all love holiday lights. Most of us have gone on evening drives to enjoy particularly festive neighborhoods, participated in tree or menorah lighting ceremonies or watched local parades and celebrations. This year, why not try something a little different? Why not go to the zoo? Two Bay Area zoos are lighting up for the holidays and in Southern CA, the Los Angeles Zoo is celebrating with lights, reindeer, and Santa.

The LA Zoo Lights holiday party will run through January 3 (with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, when it will be closed). Lights, music, Santa, and reindeer are all part of the fun. There will also be a spectacular New Year’s Eve extravaganza with dinner, rides, and live broadcast of the Times Square ball drop. For

Are you stumped about the perfect Christmas gift for those much loved pets in your life? I’ve run across some great ideas that will pamper your pets with style and make their Christmas just a little bit merrier!

If minimalism is your pet’s style, the SquareMeal, available in 3 sizes, will allow your dog or cat to dine with flair.

For your four legged friends that are into casual dining, Alessi has got some playful dinnerware. I especially like this cat bowl, perfect for your favorite feline.

Have you ever stopped to think about how much Americans seem to love their automobiles? I know when I was growing up, my mom and dad had a little green VW bug that seemed like it was part of the family. It was a feature in many family photos – and when my parents sold it we were sad, feeling as though we had lost a family friend. Looking back to another generation, an old family album has a photo of my grandmother and grandfather circa 1949 (looking very Mid-Century and much younger than I ever remember them) standing proudly beside their new car, with my 1-year-old mom perched on the hood. It was from photos like this that Marin County artist Gale S. McKee drew her inspiration for an exhibit that is opening Saturday at the Marin Museum of

If you watch the news during the holiday season, sooner or later you’ll hear about some group of thieves who do their gift shopping by following UPS, FedEx and other delivery services and helping themselves to packages that are left at the front door of unsuspecting recipients who are away from home when the delivery is made. While I don’t know how to stop the thieves, I’ve come across a wonderful doorbell that will help give you the upper hand.

RING doorbell has an integrated video camera and intercom that allows you to see and communicate with whoever is at your doorstep – even when you aren’t home! When UPS shows up, just activate your smartphone or tablet and you can give delivery instructions. If package rustlers follow in UPS’s footsteps, the
