We all love holiday lights. Most of us have gone on evening drives to enjoy particularly festive neighborhoods, participated in tree or menorah lighting ceremonies or watched local parades and celebrations. This year, why not try something a little different? Why not go to the zoo? Two Bay Area zoos are lighting up for the holidays and in Southern CA, the Los Angeles Zoo is celebrating with lights, reindeer, and Santa.

The LA Zoo Lights holiday party will run through January 3 (with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, when it will be closed). Lights, music, Santa, and reindeer are all part of the fun. There will also be a spectacular New Year’s Eve extravaganza with dinner, rides, and live broadcast of the Times Square ball drop. For

Heath Ceramics has long been celebrated for innovative design and a tradition of “form follows function” handcrafted stoneware. Founded in 1948 in Sausalito, Heath has expanded with the addition of a tile factory and retail showroom in San Francisco as well as Los Angeles.

The simple elegant design of Heath dinnerware, from the original Heath Coupe Line (modernism at its best) to the newest addition to its line make it a popular choice for Eichler and other MCM and contemporary enthusiasts, as well as those with traditional taste. In addition to dinnerware, Heath showcases household and decorative items designed by kindred artisans from around the world.

If you’ve always wanted to own some Heath pottery – or want to add to your collection,

Question: What do Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Joseph Eichler have in common?

Answer:  The Lucas Valley in Marin County, home to 1200+ Eichler homes and the Lucas Valley Chamber Orchestra.

The beautiful Lucas Valley in Marin County has a lot going for it; a bucolic setting, two well-preserved Eichler neighborhoods, and the Lucas Valley Chamber Orchestra (LVCO). While Upper Lucas Valley and Marinwood are well known Eichler communities, the LVCO has been a bit of a well kept secret – but the word is getting out.

The Lucas Valley Chamber Orchestra began in 2011 when a group of Lucas Valley residents invited a few friends and fellow musicians to get together and make music. Today it is a proudly self-directed group of 34 Bay Area

If you love architectural tours and are always looking for an excuse to visit the Napa wine country, but you missed out on the Napa Valley Designer Showhouse this weekend, don’t despair; there is still time to join Traditional Home for their annual showcase before the event ends on November 15.  And if you are in a partying mood, tickets are still available for the gala wrap party on Friday, November 13.

This year’s affair is centered on Randolph Street in downtown Napa. The three featured properties for the 2015 tour include the renovated carriage house and gardens of an 1860 Victorian (which is now a top rated B&B), an historic bungalow, and a restored Tudor Revival home owned by winemaker Drew Neiman of Neiman Cellars. Tours are happening 7 days

Today is the last day to get in on Early Bird Pricing for the 2015 Silicon Valley Home Tour and this is an event you won’t want to miss.  Showcasing four contemporary homes in Palo Alto and Los Altos, the October 10, 2015 tour is self-guided and bike-able for those so inclined.  Maps will be provided on tour day for route suggestions.

Each of the homes is uniquely contemporary, but all embrace the theme that Joseph Eichler made popular with his California, indoor-outdoor style 50 years ago. Three of the homes are in Palo Alto; one, created by Arkin Tilt Architects, is a home designed for sustainable living with a goal of net zero energy. This interesting home also brings the iconic butterfly roof into present-day design.

The iconic Mid-Century butterfly roof embodies the form follows function principle of modern architecture. Its breezy silhouette has a definitely modernist space-age personality; but the style isn’t all beauty and no brains. The inverted gable roof has a few eco-friendly traits that include rooflines open to allow natural light flow inside and the valley formed where the wings meet concentrates rainwater. Put a couple of barrels under the “V” and you’ve got a rainwater collection system. (Especially attractive right now in drought stricken California!)

While other architects dabbled with the butterfly roof concept, it was pretty much a custom home feature until architect William Krisel introduced it to Palm Springs in the late 1950s – and the rest
