Today Palm Springs is officially putting a 21st Century addition into its Mid-Century inventory when the world’s first Desert Eichler makes its debut, and the Eichler tradition will officially become a part of the Palm Springs scene.

As part of the annual Palm Springs Modernism Week, Eichler Day features a tour of the newly build Desert Eichler, panel discussions, and the Mad Men Mixer complete with Mid-Century cocktails and hors d’oeuvres that would have made my grandmother proud!

Cheers to the 21st Century’s first Desert Eichler!

If you are looking for something special to do with your Valentine this year and are tired of the usual flowers, chocolates and wining and dining, check out the new exhibit at the California Auto Museum in Sacramento.

The new show, Flash & Flair: The Atomic 50s and 60s, promises to be a Mid-Century auto buff’s dream display.  Some of us may be a bit too young to remember the iconic automobile fins of the 1950s and early ‘60s, but they were a prominent feature of autos back in the day.  First seen on Caddies, the fins (and their accompanying chrome and color) were flashy and fun, epitomizing the optimism and spirit of the era.  GM, Chrysler, and other car manufacturers vied to have the biggest, best, and most stylish fins with upright, curved, vertical,

It seems that Palm Springs has been on my mind lately.  Maybe it is Mid-Century Modern in the playground of the stars envy.  Or maybe it is time for a little vacation to soak up the sun, hang out in Frank Sinatra’s neighborhood, and party Mad Men style.  Palm Springs Modernism Week is celebrating its 10th anniversary – and I’d love to be there!

Even though, much as I’d love to be there, Palm Springs Modernism Week isn’t on my calendar this year, I can still live vicariously – and do the grand tour when I do make down to SoCal by downloading the new Palm Springs Modern App.  I kid you not.  There’s an app offering a self-guided auto tour of 80+ Mid-Century landmarks in Palm Springs, profiles of some of the key players in the architecture of the area,

February has rolled around once again – and with it comes the much-touted Palm Springs Modernism Week.  What is it that sets Palm Springs apart from other Mid-Century laden destinations (like, maybe, our wonderful Eichler neighborhoods…), attracting MCM enthusiasts from all over the world to its weeklong celebration of design and architecture?

Stepping into Palm Springs is like taking a step back in time.  It probably has more MCM homes and buildings per capita than just about anywhere.  Back in the day, it was playground for the Rat Pack and Hollywood’s A-listers; Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, and Elvis – to name a very few.  Today Palm Springs still maintains that Tinseltown allure.

The sleek,

I’ve got to ask the question.  When is an Eichler not an Eichler?  Technically, I guess I’ve always assumed that only a home built by Mid-Century developer Joseph Eichler could call itself an Eichler.  So…  What should we call the new home that has just been built and is up for sale in SoCal?

Tagged as a Desert Eichler Home, the home at 800 E Bogert Trail is being constructed using a licensed Claude Oakland/Joseph Eichler floor plan.  This new, 21st Century, A-Frame Eichler comes complete with an atrium – and certainly bears a great resemblance to an original Eichler.  It features post-and-beam construction, walnut paneling, expansive windows, open design, and the aforementioned atrium.  What has changed are the amenities.  The “new” Eichler has been

If your family is like mine, everyone is always looking for something to do this week when they aren’t eating turkey, watching the big game on TV, or participating in the Black Friday shopping frenzy.  Whether you’re just itching to get out of the house or Grandma and Grandpa are looking for something fun to do with the grandkids, a great way to get into the spirit of the holidays is going to one of the great holiday light displays that are happening this week in the Bay Area, Sacramento, and down south where our Southern California Eichler and MCM enthusiasts are.

Sacramento will be getting into the spirit on November 26, 2014 with the Sacramento Tree Lighting ceremony in Old Sacramento.  This will also be the first night of the traditional Theatre of

All of you in SoCal have a great home tour coming up this week.  The Jack and Jill Guild of Orange County is presenting their 43rd Annual Holiday Home Tour on Friday, November 21, 2014.  What is particularly exciting about this year’s tour is that two amazing Eichler homes will be in the mix, as well as a completely updated Mid-Century home and a classic Spanish Hacienda.

Anyone who has read Atomic Ranch: Design Ideas for Stylish Ranch Homes is familiar with one of the Eichlers on the tour.  This thoughtfully modified 2,066 square feet home, located in the city of Orange, was featured on the cover!  This is an incredible opportunity to appreciate this lovely Eichler home in person.

Also on the tour is a 1964 Eichler in the Fairhills Eichler

Thanksgiving may still be a week away, but that doesn’t stop the holiday preparations and festivities from getting under way.  This week, there are some fun-filled holiday events coming up in the Bay Area (I know - Christmas seems to start earlier every year…  It seems sacrilegious to begin Christmas before the Thanksgiving turkey is even in oven.)

In the East Bay, the Bay Street Annual Christmas Tree Lighting will be in Emeryville on November 20, 2014 and will include free refreshments and Santa.  In the South Bay, I think the Homes For The Holidays tour looks like fun.  More than 60 designers have joined forces to decorate 3 stunning homes in Los Gatos and Saratoga, including a 3000 sq. ft. “cottage”, a contemporary California Mediterranean estate,
