LA’s Kookiest Retro Architecture At DODLA
Is it just me, or is Dwell on Design LA offering some especially fun events this year? While I always have my eye on what DODLA has to offer, I think they’ve outdone themselves this year.
First of all, of course I love that they will be featuring Stephen Eichler (grandson of Joseph Eichler) in a special look at Eichler And The Future Of Mid-Century Modern Architecture. Eichler’s got an interesting perspective on Eichler homes – and on his grandfather. This event is likely to be high on many SoCal Eichler owners’ bucket lists; and if you are a Northern CA Eichler aficionado and looking for a mini getaway, I don’t think a trip to LA to take in this event would be a waste of time!
Another event that caught my eye is a slide show that will be presented by Charles Phoenix. Phoenix has dubbed himself as the “retro daddy” of American retro pop culture. Now I have to admit, that I’m not a particularly kitschy sort, but I can’t help but be entertained by some of the kooky, offbeat architecture that the midcentury produced. Phoenix’s “armchair field trip” of some of SoCal’s most extreme kitsch will be presented with a large dash of humor on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at the LA Convention Center.
To round the weekend off, two of the three scheduled LA home tours will be taking place on May 30 and 31. Saturday’s tour will take participants to the beach where five contemporary homes display the latest in California style. Sunday, the tour heads inland toward Pasadena, where a mix of new construction and remodels will show some of the best of what is happening on the SoCal architectural front.
