East Bay Eichler Homes
Joseph Eichler began building homes in the East Bay in the mid 1950s and continued through the 1960s. The temperate climate of the East Bay was a perfect match for Eichler’s innovative approach that included open floor plans and glass walls that blurred the boundaries between the indoors and the outdoors, creating the California Modern lifestyle. His efforts resulted in close to 800 Eichler homes in four East Bay cities:
- Walnut Creek Eichler homes (San Miguel)
- Concord Eichler homes (Rancho del Diablo)
- Oakland Hills Eichler homes (Sequoyah Hills))
- Castro Valley Eichler homes (Greenridge)
Built in the 1950s, Rancho San Miguel in Walnut Creek, CA was the first Eichler development in San Francisco’s East Bay Area. With more than 375 Eichler homes, Rancho San Miguel is the largest Eichler community in the East Bay.
Three more Eichler communities can be found in the nearby city of Concord. Rancho del Diablo is a Concord community of about 50 Eichler homes designed by Claude Oakland, A. Quincy Jones, and Frederick Emmons & Associates. Just around the corner from Rancho del Diablo is a small enclave of Eichlers clustered along West and Salem Streets, while a third neighborhood of Eichler homes is located two miles southeast of Rancho del Diablo near the Concord Community Park.
Eichler also developed two tracts in the Oakland/Hayward Hills during the 1960s. Greenridge is a Castro Valley community of 185 Eichler homes designed by Jones & Emmons and Claude Oakland. Also designed by Jones & Emmons and Claude Oakland are the Eichler homes in Sequoyah Hills, an exclusive neighborhood of 50 Eichlers built in the Oakland Hills. These two neighborhoods are of special note, as most homes built by Eichler were built on level land, and hillside homes built by Joseph Eichler are few and far between.
