San Mateo Highlands Eichlers
San Mateo Highlands, the single largest development that Joseph Eichler built, is a community of 650+ Eichler homes set in the coastal hills of southwest San Mateo. The Highlands Eichlers are located on Lexington Avenue, Monticello Road, Yorktown Road, Bunker Hill Drive, Ticonderoga Drive, New Brunswick Drive, Allegheny Way, Brandywine Road, and Tarrytown Street, as well as many side streets and cul-de-sacs that branch off these main roads.
As, perhaps, Eichler’s most ambitious project, the homes in San Mateo Highlands were designed by all three of his preferred architectural teams – Jones & Emmons, Claude Oakland, and Anshen + Allen; and were built over a span of almost eleven years. In addition to the more “traditional” single-story Eichler homes that feature atriums or courtyards, Eichler built several 2-story homes in San Mateo Highlands. The Highlands is also home to two very unique Eichler homes, the X-100 steel framed house designed by Jones & Emmons and the Life House, designed by Pietro Belluschi (with collaboration by Jones & Emmons). The Life House, built in 1958, was commissioned by Life Magazine as part of an article they were doing on affordable housing. The same design was built in Stanford the following year.
Residents of San Mateo Highlands have the use of tennis courts, a swimming pool, a fitness center, and organized recreational programs through the Highlands Recreation Center located on Lexington Avenue.
