Sunnyvale Manor I / Sunnymount Gardens Eichlers, Sunnyvale
The Eichler tradition began with Joseph Eichler’s first two housing tracts in Sunnyvale. The 36 homes in Sunnyvale Manor I were constructed by Eichler’s first home building business, the Sunnyvale Building Company. The Sunnyvale Manor I Eichlers are scattered among other mid-century flattops and ranch style homes north of East Arbor Avenue, near North Bayview Ave.
Eichler’s second venture, Sunnymount Gardens was also built in 1949. These were the first homes to be sold as Eichler Homes. With the Sunnymount homes, Eichler was still using purchased blueprints. It wouldn’t be until a year later, with his development of Sunnyvale Manor II that Joseph Eichler would begin his long relationship with Anshen + Allen architectural firm. The Sunnymount Gardens Eichler homes are located on Sunnymount Avenue and Dawn Drive.
Today, the Sunnyvale Manor I Eichlers are somewhat lost in the mix of ranch style homes and contemporary styled flattop homes built by other developers. The Eichlers in Sunnymount Gardens are a little easier to spot. Many of the homes in the tract have been remodeled, but a few homes with flattops, shed, and V-shaped roofs keep the early Eichler style recognizable.
